Newbold Quarry Park - The Hidden Country Park of Rugby

Just a mile outside Rugby town centre lies a hidden oasis where nature has reclaimed an old limestone quarry. A thriving nature reserve with a striking deep-blue lake, woodland trails, and picnic spots - free to visit, open at all times.

Covering 11 hectares, Newbold Quarry Park is managed by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. It sits quietly at the edge of a market town best known for the sport invented here, yet remarkably few visitors from outside the area know it exists.

"What was once an industrial scar has been reclaimed as a sanctuary."

The lake has a depth of up to 15 metres - and beneath its calm surface lies hidden history. Divers who explored the waters in 2018 discovered the shells of two abandoned cars from the 70s and 80s, a motorbike, vertical iron beams, and even the rusting frame of a pram. The blue-green water conceals an entire industrial chapter, now silent.

Above the waterline, the park is alive. Kingfishers flash brilliant blue as they dart across the surface. Herons wade patiently along the banks. Wild orchids bloom among the lime-rich spoilbanks - a plant community that only thrives in alkaline soils left by quarrying, now one of the rarest habitats in the English Midlands.

Entry is completely free, and the park is open at all times. There are no café facilities on site, so bring a flask and find yourself a bench by the water's edge. It's the kind of place that rewards quiet contemplation - and if you happen to catch a kingfisher at close range, you won't forget it.
